Quick Tips: My Tricks for Making a Spray Tan Last

Quick Tips
Since sunless is always better for your skin (no one wants wrinkles, right?), I suggest getting a spray tan. The key to keeping a spray tan is all in the preparation and maintenance. If you want it to last 7-10 days without blotchy patches, there are a few important things you need know…

First off, you need to prepare for your spray tan. Shower and exfoliate right before your appointment. Make sure the exfoliant you use isn’t oil based though or else it will leave residue on your skin and will keep the spray tan from soaking in correctly. After your shower, do not put any products onto your skin. To get the most out of a spray tan, try exfoliating your entire body 3 times over the course of a week before your spray tan appointment.

After you have been sprayed, give the tan some time to soak in and wait until you're are completely dry before you put on your clothes. For best results, wait at least 8 to 12 hours before you shower.

For your first shower, don’t use any soap—just rinse! You will see a lot of brown water run off (I know it’s weird LOL), but don’t worry because that’s just the bronzer color coming off. The bronzer is actually a color guide that helps spray tan artists know where they have sprayed. The actual tan you get comes from a clear formula that soaks into the skin. Once the water runs clear, step out of the shower and pat yourself dry with a towel (don’t rub, just pat). When you are dry, it’s time to moisturize with a nice hydrating lotion!

Personally, I think getting your spray tan done in the evening is best, so you can just wake up the next day and shower.

To maintain your tan, avoid using any exfoliating products (this means: no scrubs, loofahs, washcloths, toner etc.) and opt for a mild cleanser when washing your face and body. Most importantly, stay moisturized! Use thick and creamy lotions to lock in moisture to keep you tan even and smooth. I cannot emphasize this enough—it’s so, so important to keep your skin hydrated. If possible, try to moisturize twice a day—in the morning and at night before bed.

Also, one of my best tips for making a spray tan last is to use a gradual tanning lotion to moisturize with everyday, such as Jergens Natural Glow. If you use this daily, it can help extend your tan for up to 15 days and will prevent any blotchiness! Just make sure you wash your hands after using this kind of lotion (trust me, you don’t want orange palms).

If you follow all of these tips, your tan should last a little over a week! Sweet, right?
